On June 3, 2026 the Escondido City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Rinks Foundation to explore the feasibility of developing a community ice facility to be built by The Rinks Foundation, a nonprofit organization that operates eight hockey and skating facilities in Southern California, including The Rinks – Poway Ice in Poway and Great Park Ice in Irvine.
The construction, operation, and maintenance of the complex would be fully funded by The Rinks Foundation, founded by philanthropists and owners of the San Diego Gulls and Anaheim Ducks, Henry and Susan Samueli.
The facility is proposed to be built on City land at Kit Carson Park, where the current adult softball complex is located. The proposed design for the complex includes three sheets of ice, one of which will feature seating for 2,000-3,000 spectators, a restaurant, and training and competition facilities. The facility would be home to a variety of activities, including youth, high school & adult hockey programs and tournaments, competitive and recreational figure skating, sled hockey, public recreational skating, curling, broomball, and community events.
In addition, the complex would be used as a practice facility for the San Diego Gulls AHL team and a home for the San Diego Jr. Gulls, Jr. Gulls Girls, and high school hockey as part of the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League.

Esco hosts 1,500-person Arts Center (CCAE) events regularly with no traffic crisis. Ice rink daily traffic will be less. Why object now?

Dave says:
Wouldn’t it be better to keep the adult fields at kit Carson? Softball tournaments can’t use the little league fields. Reduce traffic.

Mel says:
I have concerns about traffic. Bear Valley isn't set up to handle it. It's already awful. I also don't like the loss of the green space.

Lisa Shea says:
This is not a good location! Very against this! Traffic is already bad with school events, park and theatre events! Kids need a safe place!

I am completely against putting anything like the ice rink in the park. Leave the park alone and find another site for the rink!!!!

Joe says:
The former ice rink wasn't profitable enough to keep open. So why take public parkland to build a bigger unprofitable facility? Who profits?
